Istanbul Modern is pleased to host the most comprehensive exhibition ever held in Turkey by Hussein Chalayan, one of the most prominent names of the contemporary design. The exhibition organized by ITKIB will take place between 15 July-24 October, 2010 with the support of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, Istanbul Fashion Week 2010, Istanbul Fashion Academy (IMA) and Design Museum.
Hussein Chalayan, having been twice named as the “British Designer of the Year”, is known as one of the most progressive designers in today’s fashion world. His works are motivated by ideas drawn from disciplines not readily associated with fashion, crossing between anthropology, history, science, philosophy and technology.
They have their roots in contemporary politics, and what bothers him personally, while his acclaimed runway shows function as performance pieces. Besides fashion collections, he makes installations, directs short films and designs costumes for stage.
The exhibition in Istanbul Modern presents the artist’s fashion collections, art and film projects created between the years 1994 and 2009. It explores Chalayan’s creative approach, his sources of inspiration and the ideas on genetics, technological progress, displacement, immigration and cultural identity.
The exhibition is curated by Donna Loveday.
